"This is my first cabbage! You know, a lot of times they’re kind of soft, but this one is sold! It’s going to be good eatin’!"
"What are you going to make with it?"
"Well, this one I’m giving to my parents. You have to give the first one away or you just spoil the whole spirit of gardening."
It would be difficult to come with a more on-the-nose metaphor for New York City’s income inequality problem than the new high-rise apartment building coming to 40 Riverside Boulevard, which will feature separate doors for regular, wealthy humans and whatever you call the scum that rents affordable housing.
I was talking to Danielle about this the other day. Capitalists build high end apartments using the money of the poor. They get huge grants from the city to build these things in exchange for allocating a certain percentage of the units to low-income renters/public housing. After x number of years, usually 10, they can kick out all the low income renters and change all those units to high end.
They did that in Nashua when I lived there. A condo development had to set aside half the units for public housing. After ten years they kicked everyone out. It was so many people that literally there were not enough units in the city available, low income or not. Most of those people had to leave the city they called home for a decade, probably had to lose their jobs and friends, just to find affordable housing. They razed the low income units and built brand new condos…
Thoughts on the Palestine v Israeli zionists war. I wrote this on FB originally.. Heard about pro Palestine people rioting in foreign countries.. Which isn’t necessarily bad but they’re attacking Jews who are not the guilty party. Israeli zionists and the US govt are guilty.
